AT&T and Anti Piracy Measures

AT&T is again in the news and again linked to types of interferences in user’s Internet activity. This time we are talking about piracy. It is a very big problem for music companies and movie studios and we are dealing with different copyright infringement suits filed daily. Even the big companies are affected. Google was even accused of helping pirates to distribute copyrighted material and Viacom filed an amazing $1 billion dollars lawsuit against the company because of distributing video clips that were not authorized via YouTube. At the moment it does seem like the company is trying to stop piracy on their streaming movie web site but it can not be as accurate as expected by producing companies.

Now we are seeing an announcement by AT&T and their wish to take it even further than YouTube is when talking about anti piracy moves. They want to put in such measures at the level of the Internet Service Provider. The company is considering utilizing technology manufactured by Vobile that will prevent users of their network to distribute and even view different copyrighted material illegally.

Also, this new system could force customers to watch only works from studios in a determined way and this means the studios would get income from that. On the other hand we are dealing with a problem here because this could mean an invasion of privacy for customers. AT&T is walking a very thin line and we might see users changing ISP because of the aggressiveness with which they handle anti piracy and peer to peer traffic. On the other hand the company claims that they do not want to invade privacy but aim towards cutting down network traffic. The problem is that users are not seeing it this way. If someone feels their privacy is invaded they will surely get rid of the contract with AT&T and switch to a different provider.




College Students from Japan not Interested in PCs

We can clearly notice a trend in Japan that is pushing personal computers aside. Most individuals are turning towards new gadgets for their iPods and think about choosing between a Nintendo Wii and a PlayStation 3 console. Also, rather than getting an upgrade or a new PC, the average user in Japan really wants a new digital camera or a high technology packed TV set with flat screen. College students especially want to purchase new gadgets and are considering their old computers as good enough to handle all their needs for now.

Japan revolutionized household electronics and this happened around 25 years ago. Many analysts are thinking about the possibility of seeing such decay in the PC market in different countries that are stronger from this point of view. Flat-panel TVs and mobile phones are currently a lot more important for college students in Japan and for the average consumer as well. Personal computer shipments in the country have continued to drop for a never seen before five consecutive quarters. Also, there are no signs to say that the decline will not continue. As an example, Sony and NEC have shown falling sales numbers ever since 2006 in Japan. Hitachi LTD. also declared that they will pull out of personal computer business in order to gain more sales in other markets. Children in Japan are growing up utilizing mobile phones and not personal computers so we could say that the future is definitely not bright for PCs.

On the other hand we are noticing PC makers struggling and constantly marketing their products in countries that are offering increasing sales figures. This means that locations were individuals never owned a PC is the perfect location to start such a business. We need to understand that computers are still very important in getting in touch with technology but did they reach a high enough configuration list to last a lot longer for the Japan market. I mean we can still use a computer manufactured 5 years ago but this is not enough for us as we want higher feats. In Japan it is enough and this is a scary thought!




Thousands of Japanese ripped off in ‘poodle’ scam

isn’t true but sadly it has a very good chance of being so. Not really tech news but I thought it was funny. I’m no genius by any stretch of the imagination but I’m pretty sure I would have seen this one coming a mile away and I’m pretty sure I could tell the difference between a Poodle and a Sheep.

Thousands of Japanese have been swindled in a scam in which they were sold Australian and British sheep and told they were poodles, The Sun newspaper reported today.

Flocks of sheep were imported to Japan and then sold by a company called Poodles as Pets, marketed as fashionable accessories, available at $1,600 each.

That is a snip compared to a real poodle which retails for twice that much in Japan.

The scam was uncovered when Japanese moviestar Maiko Kawamaki went on a talk-show and wondered why her new pet would not bark or eat dog food.

She was crestfallen when told it was a sheep.

Then hundreds of other women got in touch with police to say they feared their new “poodle” was also a sheep.

[One couple said they became suspicious when they took their “dog” to have its claws trimmed and were told it had hooves.

Japanese police believe there could be 2,000 people affected by the scam, which operated in Sapporo and capitalised on the fact that sheep are rare in Japan, so many do not know what they look like.

“We launched an investigation after we were made aware that a company were selling sheep as poodles,” Japanese police said, the The Sun reported.

“Sadly we think there is more than one company operating in this way.

“The sheep are believed to have been imported from overseas – Britain, Australia.”

Many of the sheep have now been donated to zoos and farms.
