More proof I’m not yet a grown-up… I’ve never been
of the sugar-coated excess that is Valentine’s Day, but I still have a stupid, hard-wired need to have my SO do something slightly more meaningful than a verbal, “Happy Valentine’s Day”.
So, when Justin confided last night that he had not had time to pick up a card, I tried (I thought) to convey to him that a short, loving email, note or e-card would be preferable to a last-minute card or nothing at all.
When no email or e-card was present this morning, I had a brief moment of being a proper grown-up. “Big deal, why is an ‘I love you’ on Valentine’s Day any different than the ones we exchange every single day?”
Then my inner child came out, and I started the following thread.

Dell order is fine. Their automated system is just giving me a chance to “fix” the cancelled first order I placed. The subsequent one is still showing as in-production and with a late February to March 1st delivery date.
PS: *NOT* a big deal, but next time, even a one liner email on V-Day is better than, uhm, nothing.
I don’t think I’m intellectual enough to pretend Valentine’s Day doesn’t exist completely, even if I don’t indulge in the usual flowers, stuffed animals and chocolates variety that some women do.
Love you,
– Shan

Glad to hear that the Dell order is fine.
You’ve stolen my thunder though on Valentine’s Day.
I can assure you I wasn’t going to end this day without getting you a card, a gift, etc. – I was planning to do that on the way home from work…..but now it’ll just look like a “response” to your e-mail…
…but that’s par for the course when you procrastinate…and I’m 100% “guilty as charged”…
(I even wore a pink shirt to work today…)

Bine, bine, bine… It’s *not* a big deal, and I guess what I’m saying is if you find yourself in a night before scenario, I’d much prefer a simple but heartfelt note/email/scrawl on a mirror than to knowing you’re picking something up at the company store or supermarket on the way home.
This isn’t some test, and I debated even saying anything this morning, but I definitely have a preference not to receive the leftover pickings of V-Day cards when I could just get a simple I love you email in the morning, or an e-card, or something simple that doesn’t scream, “Last minute obligatory card because ‘I have to’”.
I love you. I’m glad you’re festive and pink. I just wanted to explain.

32 years old. Married for 7 years. Best friends and partners since 1988… PRICELESS.
Feeling like a heel for admitting an apparently hard-wired flaw in your subconscious, and thereby making your partner feel like pond scum? … NOT WORTH CRAP!
Added Later: Proof I really am easy to please on the V-Day front — All it took was a silly poem drafted and sent between meetings for Justin to meet my
“simple, yet thoughtful” requirement for the day.
